Magritte is going against normality in his art. Here, he is contradicting reality by saying it's not a pipe when it clearly is. Another example is the one we saw in class when the man is facing the mirror and his back is his reflection. Even though the piece of art just mentioned has another allegorical interpretation, it still has to do with the fact that Magritte is contradicting reality as we know it. He is contradicting the reality we are taught to believe by society. Since he is the creator of his artwork, he can decide what it is. That's what's so great about it.
